CHI App Property Types Explained: A Simple Category Guide

✍️ Written by FieldCare — based on Community Health Inspector field experience · Last updated: September 2026

During door-to-door surveys and visits, every location entered into the CHI App needs a specific "Property Type" selected for it. New field workers often get stuck deciding which category a given building actually falls under. This article groups all the property types into a few simple sections so that decision becomes much easier.

1. Residential Places

These are places where people live, either permanently or temporarily. This category covers ordinary family homes, apartments, government quarters, and a few special living arrangements: housing occupied only by unmarried people, a farmhouse built on or near agricultural land, guest houses for temporary stays, hostels for students or employees, and temporary shelters used by nomadic groups. If people are actually living at the location, this is the first category to consider.

2. Plots and Vacant Land

This category is for places where construction is not yet complete, or where only land exists. It includes residential plots, commercial plots, completely empty land, agricultural land, and buildings still under construction. If there's no finished structure at the location yet, this is the right choice.

3. Shops and Business Premises

This category covers any place where buying, selling, or other business activity takes place. Besides an ordinary shop, it includes tailor shops, beauty parlors, dry cleaners, markets or bazaars, plazas and shopping complexes, and workshops. Animal-related businesses such as poultry farms, dairy farms, and cattle farms can be thought of as sitting close to this broader category too.

4. Religious, Educational, and Health Institutions

This category includes buildings used for worship, education, or treatment — mosques, imambargahs, madrasas, schools, colleges, hospitals, and clinics.

5. Other Public and Special-Purpose Places

Finally, there are some places that don't fit neatly into the categories above — hotels, graveyards or funeral grounds, factories, warehouses, petrol pumps/gas stations, police stations, and jails.

How to decide

If you're unsure what a location falls under, follow this order:

  • First check whether people actually live there or not
  • If yes, pick the appropriate option from the residential category
  • If business activity is happening there, choose the shop/commercial category
  • If the place is farming-related or industrial, pick the matching category
  • If you're still unsure, a generic option like "House" or "Shop" is the safest fallback

Looking at it this way, the dozens of property types inside the CHI App reduce down to just five simple groups — which makes deciding in the field a lot faster.
